Cheese Board Collective

The Cheese Board combines a cheese store, bakery, and pizzeria. The collective’s about page: a small cheese store opened in 1967; in 1971 the original owners sold the business to their employees and remained part of a 100% worker-owned shop ¹. They later moved to Shattuck Avenue. The cheese store and bakery is at 1504 Shattuck; the pizzeria is two doors down at 1512 Shattuck ¹. The about page says they sell almost 400 cheeses plus breads and pastries; the assortment changes over time.

Arizmendi’s San Francisco site lists The Cheeseboard among independently operated sister cooperatives ². North Berkeley’s “Gourmet Ghetto” reputation belongs to neighboring restaurant history. Acme Bread Company started in the same town from a restaurant bread problem rather than a cheese counter.

The cheese counter leads naturally to Tasting cheese, while the bakery and pizzeria lead to Sourdough.
