Cypress Grove

Cypress Grove is a Humboldt County creamery, not a Bay Area shop. Mary Keehn opened it in 1983 ^{1 2}. The company’s privacy policy lists Cypress Grove Chevre, Inc. at 1330 Q Street, Arcata, CA 95521 ³. Humboldt Fog, on the story page, was conceived as an ash-lined cheese named for Humboldt County fog after Keehn’s return from France ¹.

The FAQ is explicit about what Humboldt Fog is: a soft-ripened goat cheese with a line of vegetable ash, not a blue ². Ash raising pH so mold can grow is their cheesemaking account; the craft pages are Goat cheese, Cheese rind, and Affinage. Fresh logs, bloomy wheels, and aged wheels are still goat (or, for Lamb Chopper, sheep) milk — Milk — not a separate physics.

In May 2026 Cypress Grove transitioned away from its company-owned dairy and sold the goats to other dairies ¹. Cheesemaking continues, but the milk source is no longer a company herd. The FAQ describes a creamery without a tasting room or retail counter, with online orders shipping from the creamery ². A neighboring North Bay creamery is Cowgirl Creamery.
