A planted place where wine grapes grow — climate, slope, and vine, later named on a label only when appellation rules are met.

A vineyard is agriculture. Vines on a slope, in a fog line, on a valley floor, convert sunlight, water, and soil into Grape clusters. Cellar work starts after the pick. An American Viticultural Area is a delimited grape-growing geography you may put on a wine label when TTB origin rules are met — country, state, county, or AVA ¹. It is not a winemaking method.

Climate is the teaching variable #

Napa Valley Vintners: the valley was named California’s first AVA in 1981; nested AVAs name smaller geographies, not production recipes ². Sonoma County Vintners describe 19 AVAs, Pacific fog, the Russian River as a cooling conduit, and warm days with cold nights ³. Cool nights help hold Acidity in the berry; warmer sites ripen different sugar and flavor curves. That is why the same variety tastes different twenty miles apart.

Nested AVAs describe smaller geographies, while “minerality” is a tasting interpretation rather than a vineyard map.

Vintage is one year’s weather in that place #

Vintage is the harvest year. The vineyard is the multi-year plant. A vine’s age, crop load, and irrigation are farming levers, and crop limits depend on the variety, site, and applicable rules.
