Danny and I sat down to eat our lunch on some big concrete blocks at the corner of 24th Street and Harrison. As I looked up from my taco, my eye caught an unassuming sign: Humphry Slocombe. "Hey, that's the new ice cream place everyone keeps telling me about! Save room, Danny, because we have to try it."
I love ice cream but I have to admit that I have been spoiled by years of creamy
gelato in Northern Italy; there are few places in North America that make me swoon with ice-creamy happiness. Nonetheless, I am always open to trying something new and I had heard nothing but good things about
Humphry Slocombe.
Danny and I picked ourselves up and found just a little more appetite to indulge in some tasty frozen treats. When we walked in the door, I was struck by the minimalism of the room. My focus went immediately to the freezer case where flavours like salted licorice, Blue Bottle Vietnamese coffee, McEvoy olive oil and salt and pepper jumped out at me. Danny and I looked at each other: no, we aren't in Kansas anymore. This was a whole new world of magic ice cream. As
7x7 put it, "this is ice cream for adults."
Danny proceeded to taste all of the available flavours. There are about twelve and we were informed that they are changed regularly. Danny tried the balsamic caramel and declared it too fierce for his taste. I tasted the honey thyme and found it divine. But in the end, I settled on a cup of Valhorna fudgsicle and Guinness gingerbread with a little bacon peanut brittle on top. I tell you, it wasn't easy to choose.
From the first bite, I could tell this was no ordinary ice cream: the quality of the base ingredients comes through in the rich creamy texture and the flavours have an incredible intensity. What I appreciated most was the playfulness of the flavours and the interesting combinations you can create in your cup. I will certainly be making my way back to this end of the Mission to explore more ice cream delights and you should too.
Humphry Slocombe is located at 2790 Harrison Street in San Francisco and is open Tue.-Sun. noon-8pm.
